I bought this machine after using my older bread maker for years. The older one still works, but doesn't have as many options as the West Bend, and it makes vertical loaves. I wanted a machine that makes a more traditional loaf. I looked at all of the horizontal loaf machines that I could find in stores and found that most of them either had an odd sized/shaped pan, only a single kneading paddle, or were not very well built. br /br /The West Bend machine is sturdy, has a nice sized pan that locks firmly into position, and has two well placed kneading paddles. The non-stick surface on the pan and paddles works very well, although they must be washed only by hand without immersion. The non-stick is very good and washing them without immersion actually takes less effort than it would to make space for them in the dish washer. (Important - Putting any part of this machine in the dish washer will likely ruin it) br /br /The machine's programs are easy to use with selections for recipe type, loaf size, crust type, etc. I have also found that the number of programs and options that are available on this machine has kept me from having to make custom programs for my bread, even though that option is available. The machine remembers what it is doing in case there is a power outage and programs can be canceled from the front panel if the wrong one is started by mistake (my old machine had to be unplugged and started over). br /br /I have made about 20 loaves of bread in this machine so far and have had no problems with it, aside from my experimental recipe flops (without a doubt my own fault). All bread making, by machine or by hand, requires adjustment of the moisture content of the dough. This machine is no exception to that rule. Adding water or flour to a dough ball to adjust the moisture in this machine is very easy. It only takes a few tries with this machine to see what a good dough ball looks like. br /br /I have found only two downsides to this machine (and they are not deal breakers by any means) The first downside is that smaller sized loaves don't always fill the pan and it is common to get an odd sized loaf. This is easily fixed by making the next larger loaf size. The other downside is that the lid on the machine is tall enough, when opened, that the machine cannot be used with the controls facing the operator on a counter with cabinets hung above at standard height. This is also not a big deal as one only needs to turn the machine sideways on the counter and use it that way. The machine does fit under standard upper cabinets when closed, so it can be slide back out of the way for on counter storage.br /br /The instruction book that comes with the machine is fairly good considering that it has been shortened to accommodate instructions in three languages. The instructions are also available online. Reading the online instructions helped me decide that this machine was right for me before I decided to buy it. I would definitely buy this machine again. br /

Inferior product: very disappointing. - Annie - Performance very poor with terrible results. I attempted to make a satisfactory loaf of bread 5 different times and all 5 failed to produce an edible loaf of bread. Used the troubleshooter section made adjustments to recipe as suggested. Nothing seemed to help. Last loaf made was burned 1/2 way up the loaf top was gnarley. I intend to send back to Amazon for a refund. Have purchased a different brand from Target on-line. I am "soured" on West Bend products.
